HistoryFrom September to November 1778, General Washington based his military movements in Pawling, then known as Fredericksburg. During these three months, Washington slept in the home of Reed Ferris, a Quaker, and used John & Sybil Kane's house as his headquarters.
Today, the John Kane House is the Historical Society's main museum. On the first floor, visitors can learn about the area's indigenous and European settlers; the Anti-Rent Rebellion; Washington's use of Fredericksburg; and the effect of the Revolutionary War upon the Pawling community. |
